Lobaro takes cellular IoT patent license through innovative Nordic-Sisvel collaboration

Nordic’s sub-licensing agreement with Sisvel ensures customers benefit from simplified compliance and can dedicate resources to innovation and development

Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low power wireless connectivity solutions, today announced that its customer Lobaro has obtained a license to the Sisvel Cellular IoT patent pool via Nordic’s sub-licensing agreement. The license provides Lobaro—a developer of smart metering and industrial sensor technology for the IoT—access to more than 35 separate LTE-M and NB-IoT standard essential patent (SEP) portfolios on terms negotiated by Nordic with pool administrator Sisvel, and made available to all Nordic customers.

Nordic and Sisvel’s innovative licensing framework brings greater business predictability around SEP royalties while offering a simple, efficient way for IoT device makers to obtain end-product licenses through Nordic, their cellular SiP module supplier. By obtaining a Sisvel license through Nordic’s sub-licensing agreement, customers effectively receive a ‘one-stop’ legal license to make, use or sell IoT products that connect via LTE-M or NB-IoT, and that are compliant with SEP obligations under the 3GPP standards. It enables these companies to sell their products globally without requiring separate licensing in different regions.

The Lobaro agreement demonstrates the demand among cellular IoT product developers for streamlined licensing solutions that reduce legal risks, minimize administration, improve visibility, and allow companies to focus on what truly matters; innovation and the development of next-generation IoT solutions.

“It is great to see key clients like Lobaro benefit from our easier and more efficient licensing solution for cellular IoT device makers,” says Kristian Saether, Sr Product Director - Long Range, of Nordic Semiconductor. “We are seeing growing awareness around the need for simple and fair SEP licensing across the IoT industry, and Nordic Semiconductor is committed to ensuring IoT companies’ voices are heard as we work to bring them the best possible licensing solutions.”

“We are delighted to complete this licensing agreement covering a large share of cellular IoT SEPs,” says Theodor Rohde, Managing Director of Lobaro. “Working with Nordic, a supplier who takes intellectual property licensing as seriously as we do, means we can dedicate more energy to product development and scaling our solutions.”

“We welcome Lobaro as the latest Sisvel Cellular IoT licensee and thank Nordic for their partnership on this initiative,” says Sven Torringer, Sisvel Cellular IoT Program Manager. “The Nordic team has a deep understanding of the technological and commercial landscape and has worked very hard in recent years to help find fair licensing practices that encourage greater adoption of cellular IoT products and services.”

“As IoT adoption accelerates globally, access to, and the ability to license, essential technologies on FRAND [Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory] terms will be crucial to ensuring innovation, accessibility, and fair competition go hand in hand,” continues Kristian Saether. “Nordic and all its partners remain dedicated to building a future where open standards continue to drive technological progress for everyone.”
